Vanguard on Current TV – Episode dealing with PTSD

This is a great series on Current TV if you have not seen it before. I worry about this being a possible element to other potential violence we have going on with police and protester altercations.

From the link on this particular episode:
Correspondent Kaj Larsen investigates the alarming rise in the number of soldiers who have been traumatized by war and are now accused of bringing the violence home. Of the more than two million men and women who have served in the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as many as a third of them may now have post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. A growing number of these vets are being charged with violent crimes, and Kaj travels to prisons and mental health facilities in Arizona, Colorado and Oregon to hear their stories.

Things I do not wish to see happen.

What's going to happen when an overzealous "keeper of the peace" comes up against a PTSD-diagnosed veteran in an altercation? In my opinion, not if, but when. Unless this gets under control.

Everything starts small. We're playing with fire.

Reading through the list of these riots, I don't think it's going to take much for a protest to suddenly become far worse. This is not meant as fear mongering. This is meant to point out how we have all the elements in play to add to this list.

Where exactly are our political leaders? I'm looking forward to hitting the news channels later this evening.

Police Brutality

An excerpt from the link below:

"Police officers are legally permitted to use force, and their superiors β€” and the public β€” expect them to do so, when appropriate. According to Jerome Herbert Skolnick, in dealing largely with disorderly elements of the society, some people working in law enforcement may gradually develop an attitude or sense of authority over society, particularly under traditional reaction-based policing models; in some cases the police believe that they are above the law."

Can Rubber Bullets Kill You?

Some quick excerpts from the article:

"Just like real deal bullet, the potential danger of baton rounds also depends on how they’re fired."

"Despite this evidence of rubber bullet-inflicted injuries and fatalities, the U.S. Department of Defense includes rubber bullets in its arsenal of nonlethal weaponry…"

"[The U.S. Department of Defense] even looked into developing rubber bullets for use in rapid-fire machine guns earlier this year."

Re-posting, especially after seeing the latest violence

We don't want to think we are like other countries with fellow citizens fighting in the street, and yet, here we are. The "authority" vs. the "protesters". So, when do we have a tank in the streets?

My appreciation and thoughts go out to all that have been injured.

Watching the OWS protests around the country this morning…

Not to bandy about incendiary terms, but watching the #OWS reports and videos, especially of police violence and local government trickery against protesters, I can't help but think of terms like "civil war" and "terrorism".

The Department of Defense Dictionary of Military Terms defines terrorism as the calculated use of unlawful violence or threat of unlawful violence to inculcate fear; intended to coerce or to intimidate governments or societies in the pursuit of goals that are generally political, religious, or ideological.

A definition of civil war is an armed conflict between a government and another group from within the same country.

How do these terms not apply to how protesters are being treated? How do they not apply to the overall attitude of the 1% against the rest of us in how they try to shut down dissent and manipulate the public dialogue? How do these terms not apply to the violence by "authorities" who are citizens of our country against protesters exercising their political rights who are also fellow citizens?

Apologies if this is somewhat stream of consciousness. Sometimes things need said in the moment so as not to run the risk of letting the emotion, and then the words and thoughts, die in editing. Thanks for listening.

[Recipe]

Cookies for breakfast! Oh yes, it's good to be an adult!

What to do when you don't want to sleep in the wee hours of the morning? Bake cookies. These turned out amazing, and my townhouse smells wonderful, even this morning. Here are some pics and the recipe, my friends. Click into the shared album for pictures. πŸ˜‰

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies

Mix together:
2 cups sugar
2 cups pumpkin (1 can Libby's 15 oz)
1 cup vegetable oil
2 eggs

Sift together and add to above:
4 cups flour
1 tsp salt
2 tsp cinnamon
4 tsp baking powder

Dissolve together and add to rest:
2 tsp baking soda
2 tsp milk (preferably whole)
2 tsp vanilla

Now add:
2 cups Nestle semi-sweet chocolate chips (12 oz package)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Drop on lightly greased cookie sheet. (See picture in shared album for an example of size). Bake approximately 10-12 minutes. (mine took exactly 10 minutes) NOTE — Be careful not to overcook. Cookies will be soft and moist.

Enjoy! Let me know how you like 'em! πŸ˜‰
