Last year I published a similar post and mosaic to ring in 2012 (http://goo.gl/oBeBA). It was comprised of all the avatars for users with me in their circles and for users that I had in my circles. The mosaic was comprised of 3025 images in a 55×55 grid. A year later, I wanted to revisit this project and it was a tad more daunting to accomplish, which is why I did not get it published until the 3rd.
This year's mosaic is comprised of 11,449 images in a 107×107 grid! Info at the bottom of the post on how I got this number and saved the images.

EDIT: +Dustin Cochran made a really cool overlay to search the mosaic via the browser and give you the coordinates for a cell when you click on it! Go here to use it: http://digipiph.com/mosaic/?
Over the past year, I have had the honor and privilege to connect with so many more of you! Many of you may only catch a random post by me or not notice me at all and have me hanging about as part of a larger shared circle you added and forgot about – that's okay! I do it too. 😉 However, there are so many of you that have become a part of my daily Google+ experience, whether in your amazing interactions or your own thought-provoking or funny-bone-tickling posts.
To accidental adds, lurkers, media elites, G+ rock-stars and all my crazy friends, this is for you! I less than three you all and it was well worth the hours spent at the laptop until the wee hours listening to Pandora and eating waffles. I hope you enjoy.
Now, the MOSAIC CHALLENGE!
Okay, so I couldn't just leave well enough alone with a picture. 😉 Download the original full-size image if you want to have some fun. Some people did it last year on the Google+ size version on their cell phones but this one is way bigger! EDIT: Google+ does not save a big enough version of the file. 1) Can you find yourself? I'll admit, I'm a little vain sometimes. I searched for myself. Took me way longer than it should! Please note, I saved all the avatars on the 1st and 2nd. If you added me after that I apologize that your picture did not make it into the mosaic. Also, if you changed your avatar recently, look for your old one!
Most of us share the Geek gene. I have a Doctor Who, Star Wars, Firefly, and The IT Crowd challenge hidden within the mosaic.
2) Find the following Star Wars images: Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Princes Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Obi-Wan Kenobi, C3PO, R2D2, Yoda, Jawa, Stormtrooper, and Death Star.
3) Find the following Doctor Who images: Each of the 11 Doctors, Tardis, and a Dalek.
4) Find the following Firefly images: Malcolm Reynolds, Zoe Washburne, Hoban Washburne, Inara Serra, Jayne Cobb, Kaylee Frye, Simon Tam, River Tam, and Derrial Book (Preacher).
5) Find Roy and Maurice from The IT Crowd. Be careful not to drop the Internet. 😉
6) I also threw in, for good measure: a #dropbear crossing sign, two rubber ducks, and The Tick.
Random stuff:
If I somehow missed you, let me know and I will put you into a random drawing for a random prize of random value.
Anyone providing me with the most coordinates of all the challenge images (there are 40 total) will definitely be getting something random from me!
Once more, Happy New Year! Looking forward to 2013 with all of you!
How I nearly went crazy saving all the darn avatars:
With nearly 15k people who have circled me or added a shared circle with me in it, Google+ let me grab a little over 9k avatars from my "Circles" page under "Have you in circles". I also saved over 4k avatars for users that I have in various circles. I used the "Save Images" plug-in in Firefox and paged down through the lists one click at a time, saving after each group. Cache viewers were unreliable in reporting all the images, saving the entire page without using a plug-in was (even more) cumbersome, and the Google+ API still does not have support for finding information on circles so far as I could tell. The way the circles page works, I ended up with thousands of duplicates using this method so I also had to download and run a program to find and remove duplicate images. I am not sure what the problem is between the reported number of people who have me circled and the actual number of avatars I was able to save, but there was a disparity of about 5k. I sure hope I have not gotten blocked by that many people! Looking through the images I captured, though, I see the avatars for all the peeps that I know and love from day to day interactions. I am guessing there is either a security permission where many users are somehow not allowing their avatars to be seen in my listing, or Google+ is not reporting a fairly large sampling of users who have me circled but whom I do not have circled back at this time. If anyone has any information on this, I would love to know!
