Hidden past of Charlie Hoover!

Before +Charlie Hoover was the lovable geek we all know, he had a very different life back in the late 90's. He was… The Computer Man, singing and dancing his way through your company's worst technical problems! I'm sure he had hoped this video would remain in obscurity or that, at least, he would not be recognized. Sorry, Charlie! 😉

My pencil is bigger than Scribblegraph's

Heheh… This will make little sense without looking at my previous post/share of +scribblegraph's contest. This was a quickie Photoshop from a year+ ago I used as a call to action for brother +Keith Cramer's b-day.

Anywho! Insert 15-year-old mentality chuckling here.

Newly Available Art Prints by Eduardo Rodriguez Calzado

The most modest plug I have ever seen. Although I have seen him asked many times what paintings he has available for prints, artist +Eduardo Rodriguez Calzado just announced new works available in a comment on a post from over a month ago.

His comment, "So here comes my shameless plug in. If anyone is interested in prints of my work I have uploaded several of my latest paintings on fineartamerica and deviantart."

If you are a fan, like I am, or someone who just appreciates good and honest talent coupled with humility and an all-around good nature, please take a look at Eduardo's work. Also, let's plug it for him! Visit his stream and share something you enjoy. You can also share this post if it is easier; I am not trolling for personal shares, though.

The Ballad of Barry Allen by Jim's Big Ego

Ever since I was a kid I have been into superheroes and the idea of having superpowers; what it would feel like, how it would change my life. As I grew older, I liked to see the stories depicting superheroes with real-world problems. They were fallible and troubled souls like the rest of us mere mortals. Now, that really intrigued me.

When the group Five for Fighting came out with the song Superman (It's Not Easy) I could just sit and listen repeatedly. Other than the fact that I like the song, the sadness evoked from the most powerful man on Earth was very powerful to me. _The Ballad of Barry Allen_ is much less known but possibly even more touching. Imagine being the fastest man on Earth. Incredible power, yet in this depiction, his mind moves so fast that he can not step down to deal with other human beings; we are tortuously slow. Imagine the worst business meeting or boring conversation. For us, they end in a few minutes or, at worst, hours. To The Flash those minutes or hours may feel like years.

Do a double-header of It's Not Easy and Ballad of Barry Allen sometime. If you are like me and intrigued by the torturous side of superpowers, you'll enjoy it. If you know of any similar songs, please send them my way!

Some of the more poignant lyrics:

"I'd like to get to know you… but you're talking much too slowly."

"And do you think you can imagine anything so lonely? I know you'd really like me but I never stick around, because time keeps dragging on."

"And I want to be there when you laugh or cry but it takes too long. It seems so slow to me."

Full Lyrics:

I've got time to think about the beauty of a thousand variations
Of the beating of a wing
Of a hummingbird suspended in the aspic of the world
Moving slower than molasses
As I’m off to catch the girl
Who is falling off the bridge

And I'm there before she knows it
I'll be gone before she sees me
Got my hand around her waste
I pull her back to safety
By the time she knows what happens
There will be someone else who needs me
Because time keeps dragging on

And on, And on, And on
Time keeps dragging on
Time keeps dragging on

I've got time to think about my past as I dodge Between the bullets how my life was so exciting Before I got this way and how long ago it was Now I never can explain by the clock that's on the Tower or the one that's in my brain

And I'm there before you know it
I'll be gone before you see me
And I'd like to get to know you
But you're talking much too slowly
And I know you wanna tank me
But I never stick around
Because time keeps dragging on

And on, And on

And you say the time goes rushing by
But it seems so slow to me
And you see a blur around you fly
But it takes too long
It seems so slow to me

Time keeps dragging on

How I wish I'd never gone into my lab to
Experiment that night before lightning flashed Around me
And time changed speed
Now I try to be so patient and wait for Calamity to strike
Because when things change in an instant
It's almost fast enough for me

And I'll be there before you know it
I'll be gone before you see me
And do you think you can imagine
Anything so lonely
And I know you'd really like me
But I never stick around
Because time keeps dragging on
And on…

And you say the time goes rushing by
But it seems so slow to me
And you see a blur around you fly
But it takes too long
It seems so slow

And you say the time goes rushing by
But it seems so slow to me
And you complain I'm gone before you blink your eye
But it takes too long
It seems so slow to me

And you say the time goes rushing by
But it seems so slow to me
And I want to be there when you laugh or cry
But it takes too long
It seems so slow to me

Time keeps dragging on

Cell Phone Addiction article by Peter Farrelly

I do not know whether to rail against this guy or heap praises on him. He states at the beginning that he does not have a cell phone and calls himself "Dooshy McDouche" and I am still somewhat inclined to agree. However, read the entire article and there are a lot of valid points; I may only be balking against what he is saying because I am one of the addicted.

No matter whether you agree or not, it's a good, and thought provoking, read.

Doctor Who Pac-Man Mash-Up

Seems I am on a Doctor Who kick lately. I just saw this cool mash-up t-shirt from gimmicktees.com. Personally, I like it more as an image than a shirt; it would make a great mini-poster.

Mosaic Challenge & Happy New Year 2013 to my Friends and Peers!

Last year I published a similar post and mosaic to ring in 2012 (http://goo.gl/oBeBA). It was comprised of all the avatars for users with me in their circles and for users that I had in my circles. The mosaic was comprised of 3025 images in a 55×55 grid. A year later, I wanted to revisit this project and it was a tad more daunting to accomplish, which is why I did not get it published until the 3rd.

This year's mosaic is comprised of 11,449 images in a 107×107 grid! Info at the bottom of the post on how I got this number and saved the images.

Download the full-size 10meg version "2013-New-Year-Mosaic.jpg" from here: http://goo.gl/FXNxN

EDIT: +Dustin Cochran made a really cool overlay to search the mosaic via the browser and give you the coordinates for a cell when you click on it! Go here to use it: http://digipiph.com/mosaic/?

Over the past year, I have had the honor and privilege to connect with so many more of you! Many of you may only catch a random post by me or not notice me at all and have me hanging about as part of a larger shared circle you added and forgot about – that's okay! I do it too. 😉 However, there are so many of you that have become a part of my daily Google+ experience, whether in your amazing interactions or your own thought-provoking or funny-bone-tickling posts.

To accidental adds, lurkers, media elites, G+ rock-stars  and all my crazy friends, this is for you! I less than three you all and it was well worth the hours spent at the laptop until the wee hours listening to Pandora and eating waffles. I hope you enjoy.

Now, the MOSAIC CHALLENGE!

Okay, so I couldn't just leave well enough alone with a picture. 😉 Download the original full-size image if you want to have some fun. Some people did it last year on the Google+ size version on their cell phones but this one is way bigger! EDIT: Google+ does not save a big enough version of the file. Download the 10meg version "2013-New-Year-Mosaic.jpg" from here: http://goo.gl/FXNxN

1) Can you find yourself? I'll admit, I'm a little vain sometimes. I searched for myself. Took me way longer than it should! Please note, I saved all the avatars on the 1st and 2nd. If you added me after that I apologize that your picture did not make it into the mosaic. Also, if you changed your avatar recently, look for your old one!

Most of us share the Geek gene. I have a Doctor Who, Star Wars, Firefly, and The IT Crowd challenge hidden within the mosaic.

2) Find the following Star Wars images: Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Princes Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Obi-Wan Kenobi, C3PO, R2D2, Yoda, Jawa, Stormtrooper, and Death Star.

3) Find the following Doctor Who images: Each of the 11 Doctors, Tardis, and a Dalek.

4) Find the following Firefly images: Malcolm Reynolds, Zoe Washburne, Hoban Washburne, Inara Serra, Jayne Cobb, Kaylee Frye, Simon Tam, River Tam, and Derrial Book (Preacher).

5) Find Roy and Maurice from The IT Crowd. Be careful not to drop the Internet. 😉

6) I also threw in, for good measure: a #dropbear crossing sign, two rubber ducks, and The Tick.

Random stuff:

If I somehow missed you, let me know and I will put you into a random drawing for a random prize of random value.

Anyone providing me with the most coordinates of all the challenge images (there are 40 total) will definitely be getting something random from me!

Once more, Happy New Year! Looking forward to 2013 with all of you!

How I nearly went crazy saving all the darn avatars:
With nearly 15k people who have circled me or added a shared circle with me in it, Google+ let me grab a little over 9k avatars from my "Circles" page under "Have you in circles". I also saved over 4k avatars for users that I have in various circles. I used the "Save Images" plug-in in Firefox and paged down through the lists one click at a time, saving after each group. Cache viewers were unreliable in reporting all the images, saving the entire page without using a plug-in was (even more) cumbersome, and the Google+ API still does not have support for finding information on circles so far as I could tell. The way the circles page works, I ended up with thousands of duplicates using this method so I also had to download and run a program to find and remove duplicate images. I am not sure what the problem is between the reported number of people who have me circled and the actual number of avatars I was able to save, but there was a disparity of about 5k. I sure hope I have not gotten blocked by that many people! Looking through the images I captured, though, I see the avatars for all the peeps that I know and love from day to day interactions. I am guessing there is either a security permission where many users are somehow not allowing their avatars to be seen in my listing, or Google+ is not reporting a fairly large sampling of users who have me circled but whom I do not have circled back at this time. If anyone has any information on this, I would love to know!
