Ran across this today… Cartoons show the difference in what happens between two geek guys when one wears his Green Lantern shirt versus what happens when a geek girl wears hers.
So, ladies, does this happen to you?
I just happen to be wearing my Green Lantern shirt today so it was like I was destined to post this.

true
Yes that has happened. BUt the cool shirt dude happens more.
I've mostly gotten the "cool shirt" comments.
+Jenn Thorson your a cool lady anyway
Good to hear cool shirt happens. There was that (now famous) rant by some comic book dude the other day where he was being a total ass. Despite being nerdy, I've never been into comics. I can't name a green lantern.
Aw, thanks +frank j Zbink. You rock. 🙂
thanks Jenn
Mine was Vampire the Masquerage RPG shirts. After Interview with a Vampire came out (Twilight for old people like me) I got some guys coming up to me and hassling about how that wasn't an Interview shirt and that it was for a game and blah blah. Meanwhile I played in a 100 people strong Vampire the Masquerade LARP, I was the head of character creation, and I ran my own 30 person LARP on a differnt day. So it was always fun to tell them that yes I know it's a game and school them on it.
I'm psyched to see anyone geeking out in shirts depicting something they are into. Clothes should be fun. 😉
I usually get "cool shirt" for my nerdy shirts (largely from Woot). But then, that's from the older kids and the parents at my kid's school, which is a private school for gifted kids so the population skews to the science/nerd love already, which tends to trump sexism.
Not that this school isn't rife with sexism. It is. But on the shaming of geek girls, at least, it is good. Mostly.
Oh and there's also that thing where I'm known as being a snarky loud badass of feminism so if anyone was going to question a geek girl they'd inevitably move to a less ragefacey target.
However, my circles here on G+ have plenty of apologists for this sort of sexist shit who make excuses as to why it's okay, all Joe Peacock style. Grrrrrrrr.
+Kimberly Chapman Loving the quote, "…so if anyone was going to question a geek girl they'd inevitably move to a less ragefacey target." <3
I was a Call of Cthulhu RPG fan
I ABSOLUTELY get the girl version for things. I used to have a really cool 100th issue Xmen t-shirt (before the movies!), and I got really effing tired of dudes quizzing me about things, or asking if it was my boyfriend's t-shirt. They got cussed at a lot.
As a girl I find it difficult to find a comic/manga/anime dealer that doesn't hire dickbags as well. I was always made to feel like I had to defend my interest in something. Do guys have to do that?
My response "F you dude, I have comics in bags I bought before you were born."
+Amanda Rachelle Warren I definitely think nerd/geek females get way more flak than their male counterparts.
I find in most interest groups there are some folks that think everyone they haven't met/grilled is a poser, and they're typically the only folks that will grill guys about nerd stuff.
edit, I should add that I don't socialize much, so I may not really have a clue. Also when I know things about stuff, I usually just start blathering on about them to anyone that will listen. When I don't know stuff I just say "I don't know what that means", yes, I stole the line from Bones.
+Amanda Rachelle Warren I have yet to have found a comic/RPG store where I didn't feel like a piece of meat as soon as I walked through the door. And that's weird for me because I'm not hot so I'm not used to it, but in that crowd, apparently my vagina qualifies all on its own.
I started to wonder if it was my imagination so we tested it with my husband going in first and then I'd come in a few minutes later and yup…guys in there got chest-thumpy, albeit in nerdy ways. Unfuckingbelievable. And then comic/RPG shops wonder why we stop coming, and why we don't bring our daughters. You know, the daughters who love comics. Because I don't want her to see that crap.
Although Peo's almost at an age where she'll * snikt * ka-click * any fuckwit who tries…ooooo that'll be something to see…have I mentioned I have her enrolled in a girl-positive karate class now? >:D
Yeah I always have trouble keeping a straight face when I walk into a comic shop or game store and all sound and motion stops and everyone stares.
+Jess Nut They turn into OMG BOOBIES zombies. ZOMGBIES. <—- ooo did I just coin that?!
"apparently my vagina qualifies all on its own" -reminds me of a professional kitchen environment.
I just realized, all the guys I know in real life who like comics are cooks. Kitchens are probably much worse than comic shops 🙁
I try to keep my vagina in my pants while in any kitchen environment.
😀
More seriously, yes, +Michael Bennett. Look at cake decorating…almost all of the people doing it are female, and yet who makes some of the biggest bucks? Men. I mean, some truly awesome, talented, super-nice men. But…yeah.
Just for me I never really made much of the whole gender issue, as matter of fact there are many lady geeks that I wish I had their knowledge
<horror movie/comic book/manga/anime geek.
I get the "girl grill" a lot. Which has a good side effect of making me know my shit.
And good for Peo! Peo is cool! Karate Peo!
Yeah, only not about comic books stuff. I get the grilling over literature when I wear a literature joke t-shirt.
Or science when I wear a space shirt.
+Kimberly Chapman yeah, the wage gender inequality gap in general is really messed up. Looking at it on a graph is frightening.
My lady friend is a cook, and whenever she tells people they assume she must be into cake decorating, which she actually despises. She dislikes it as something for her, not in general.
I use to work in a work situation that was heavily male, I was a supervisor and had a few women who wanted to work for me because I was not male only minded.
See I don't get it on the science, because again, I'm wearing those shirts around people who know my nerdFu qualifications.
And now of course I'm the Official Sucromancer of the Realm. >:D
I was just giving my boss hell because he hired 3 new people (our department was 8 before that) who were all guys. I work in IT so that's really not that unusual, I was just busting his balls. He said that only one female applied for any of the jobs he posted and he did hire her (for one of our other offices).
I was surprised that no women applied, but not shocked.
My husband's company has that problem. They'd love to hire more women. Few apply and those that do either don't have the qualifications or if they are qualified, they're highly sought and get bidding wars from other companies.
Maybe I should look for another job…. lol. No one ever sought me.
Weird, I've always just gotten the "cool shirt" response. Sometimes guys are a little surprised that a girl likes all this "guyish geeky stuff" (as my non-geek female friends call it)
I can't say that I've had this issue with geeky shirts. However, I have had this issue A LOT while gaming. I'm expected to have played every game that ever existed and often find myself forced into an impromptu round of video game trivia. It's fairly annoying.
Typically, I think a lot of the sexism in gaming/geekery issues are blown out of proportion, but this particular habit of making women prove they're legit is one that I've experienced too much to shrug off.
Over my younger years when I thought many reports of sexism were overblown, I gradually learned that they only ever seemed overblown until I saw them firsthand. Then, if anything, they seemed under-reported.
