Captain America – The Winter Soldier (no spoilers)

Aside from contrivances that I am willing to write off in the name of pacing and keeping the movie to a watchable length without losing the audience in an extra hour's worth of details, I loved it. No spoilers, but the contrivances in question are:

(1) Wow, quite convenient [item] is located in [exact place where item is needed] at exactly the right time.
(2) Universal coincidence that [person] just happens to be [exactly the right person] with no setup beyond a one in a billion chance.
(3) Hollywood infatuation with timing to the n'th of a second.
(4) Plot always trumps physics. 😉
(5) The notable lack of other superheros who you just might think in the real world would not be too busy to maybe lend a hand. Okay, maybe that is close to a spoiler, but you know by the cast which actors are in or not.

You can figure out what I am talking about after seeing the movie, because, ultimately you want to see this movie. As a long time fan of Captain America from the comic books (well before they got silly with them) I was more than willing to pause my brain for a few seconds as needed and fill in the needed excuses to wave away the contrivances and it did not ultimately diminish my enjoyment of the film!

The cast was excellent, I enjoyed the story more than I anticipated by far, and it was a very FUN ride. C'mon, Falcon! Yay! Black Widow?! Yay!!! Everyone did great. Stay after the credits. Then…. stay some more until the credits are COMPLETELY done. Two stingers. I also saw it in 3D and, though 2D would have been fine, I do not feel ripped off for paying the extra for the 3D this time – which, other than Avatar, I have not been a big fan of so far.

  1. Eoghann Irving says:

Ever since the Avengers, people have raised the where are the other superheroes question about these movies.

But this sort of stuff happens in the comics all the time and we just accept that everyone else is busy for one reason or another without an explanation. I think the same has to apply for the movies too.

  2. Scott Cramer says:

+Eoghann Irving Agreed… perhaps another world saving mission that we are not privy too going on at the same time. Perhaps the villains in question in the current movie cooked something up behind the scenes to make sure everyone else was otherwise preoccupied. I'm willing to forego a complaint about other heroes not being present. Now… if the plot line for this movie stretched to weeks or longer, then I'd retract my statements and have expected other heroes to wise up and come onto the scene. The timing of this movie worked quite nicely, I thought. The only part I wonder about is why each of the Avengers do not have a hotline to the other Avengers in times like this. But… waving my contrivance eliminating wand, I'll just say that the villains took care of this and it did not work. 😀

  3. Michelle C says:

Glad I'm not the only one that had those "really?!!" Moments while watching this movie. I know they are superheroes but "really?!" Having said that I did I enjoy this movie quite a bit

Not a spoiler but… It should be impossible to punch that shield without breaking your hand. If he just kept it in front of him, fights over

  4. Matthew Bannock says:

For a moment I thought they were going to avoid the cliche that is #3, but nope they couldn't resist.

    Still a great movie though!

Speaking of cliche:   (Possible minor spoil)

x character launches into explaining the plot, because mwhahahaha!  Brilliant Evil!

Yes there was an explanation, but seriously he could have talked about anything other than the grand plan.

  5. Kent Goertzen says:

On the other super heroes thing:

I don't think with the current MCU, it is too far fetched they are a no show.

Well until the launch of the carriers there would likely be a media blackout on anything else.  And even at max speed Iron Man if he is back in California would take some time to get to D.C.

Thor is in Asgard likely doesn't hear about it until after,  Hulk well who knows where Banner is, or if he'd be able to travel there in time.

F4 are being rebooted so they don't exist in the MCU anymore.

X-Men aren't exactly friendly with the government.   They aren't enemies, but there isn't exactly love lost on mutants (besides the movies rights issue).

    Spider Man?  Yeah not likely.

    Who is missing?

  6. Jim Nutt says:

The only one that plausibly could have shown was Hawkeye, and he may have been off somewhere else. This all unfolded over the course of about 3 days, so it's plausible that the others didn't hear what was going on until afterward.

  7. Matthew Bannock says:

+Kent Goertzen   The only one I feel like they should have mentioned is Hawkeye* as he is literally a SHIELD agent . . .  but yes, there is so much going on in MCU that it is conceivable that he was just deployed somewhere else.  Wakanda perhaps?  😉

When in doubt I assume off page heroes have their hands full with other villains.   It's fun to imagine something big may have been going down in other places too.   Mr Sinister?   AIM?  There may be lots of bad guys who exist and they just haven't had screen time.

*Jim I must have written this as you were posting 🙂

  8. Jake Kern says:

I remember Marvel had an official answer to "Where is War Machine?" for the Avengers movie. I guess the fact that so many stories are solo but this one had Falcon & Black Widow shows to me that the heroes who were available to help were there…and merchandise. 😉 Still haven't seen it yet.

  9. Claudio Golia says:

I had the same "why can't the other Avengers lend a hand" moment, but quickly got passed it due to many of the response mentioned here. The whole defying physics and probabilistic something that I just accept when I see a superhero film of any kind. It's part for the course. Otherwise, you'll never enjoy it.

They could do a better job with continually adding in these last second heroics.

I loved this film. Best action I've seen Marvel or not. The hand to hand fighting between Cap and WS are Flawless.

  10. Matthew Bannock says:

+Jake Kern Check out the movie if you get the chance. I feel like the Captain America movies are some of the better super hero flicks that I have seen in the last few years, and that is saying something.

Try to avoid spoilers if you can, there are some fun reveals that would have lost steam had I known going in.

  11. DeAno Jackson says:

To coment on the "where was everyone else" thing.

    1) At the end of Iron Man 3, Tony Stark destroyed all his armors and removed the arc reactor from his chest. Until we hear otherwise (which I'm sure we will eventually), Iron Man is out of play.

    2) Thor couldn't care less about some conspiracy in a orginaization in another dimension. I could see him showing up if Fury or Rogers asked him to, but I'm pretty sure that he's slightly out of cell phone range.

    3) I lied before; the only way that Thor could care less about some conspiracy in SHIELD would be if his name was Bruce Banner.

    4) Hawkeye not being there is interesting, but word around the campfire says that he has a VERY good reason for not being around. Stay tuned….

  12. Scott Cramer says:

Great comments all!!! Reading your words has me liking the film even more. 🙂

  13. Matthew Bannock says:

+DeAno Jackson oooh, now I want to hear these campfire tales.    I hope my baseless Wakanda speculation is right.

  14. DeAno Jackson says:

+Matthew Bannock Haven't head anything about Wakanda, but we may be looking at a recast. If so, we should be seeing quite a bit of Hawkeye.

  15. Jo Lane says:

+David Mills & I enjoyed CA:TWS but like you I questioned why other characters weren't called in to help save the day!

Also 90% of the cinema audience left at the end of the film (before either extra credit scenes) and another 5% left after the 1st extra credit scene – do these people not know that Marvel ALWAYS put something at the very end of the credits???

  16. Eoghann Irving says:

A lot of people, most people, don't actually care about that stuff +Jo Lane

We are actually the weird ones, not them. 😀

  17. Jo Lane says:

Somebody very wise once said to me:
Normal is boring. Being weird and crazy makes you happy in life

So I'll take being weird +Eoghann Irving 😛

  18. Jim Nutt says:

+Jo Lane Yeah, people were clearing out of the theater before the end credits and we're like "Haven't you people ever seen a Marvel movie? Sit back down!" And then more left after the mid credit scene..
