Thoughts at Sunset

Night flees
as the sun chases.

The moon looks on -
a powerless,
gentle lover.

Piercing rays overtake the soft darkness.

Night draws back,
taking refuge deep within her earth bed.

The sun finally peaks,
and tires.
Falling slowly from the night,
a satisfied,
disinterested lover.

The timid moon,
pushed aside,
reappears
and calls his love from hiding.

Night rises,
soothing and cooling the burning land,
still hot from the sun's passion.

A thousand eyes open
and look onward
to watch for the dawn.
